July 4, 2016

Well we did it! It was tough but we did it!!! Mario was baptized last Saturday and confirmed the following day. Pictures are at the bottom.
So last week I explained how I put him on date. Well this week we taught him every single day so he would be ready for Saturday and it was hard!!!! But he told us that he had a dream that Hermano Silva would baptize him and so he was ready to do everything possible to be
baptized and he was!!!!! He is a very amazing mean and very humble! He knows it's true and we are just blessed to be the elders that were able to baptize him. Hermano Silva is on the left and Mario is on the right.

Other than that we have had several lessons with Jorge and María. They are both super excited for their baptism tomorrow!!!! But she is very nervous. But we have been texting her scriptures today to help her. I am so excited to see them be baptized!!!!!! They had their baptism interview yesterday and Elder Lyons was the one that did it. I wasn't able to stay for it because I had to go with our Ward mission leader to teach a lesson but when I got back Elder Lyons told me that he's never interviewed more prepared people in his mission. Also that Jorge talked about the possibility of him serving a mission. When I heard this I freaked out! So we had planned a temple Trip with Jorge to the Salt Lake temple and it went great! Picture at the bottom.
On the way home Elder Jimenez started talking to Jorge and said "we encourage you to think about serving a mission." I then pushed Elder Jimenez aside and said "will you commit to God to serve a mission?" It was pretty bold but he said yes! He is great!

Also we achieved the standard of excellence again this week for the third time in a row. It's cool I've never done that before!!! Hopefully I can keep it going in my next transfer.

Anyways have a great week!!!!!

June 27, 2016

Well this week was absolutely insane!!!!! One of the busiest weeks
I've ever had!!!! So I already talked about Jorge and Maria but I'm going to be talking
about them again for this week.

So this week was President Chamber's last full week in the mission. We
will be welcoming President and Sister Lansing in the mission field
this Friday. I am really sad to see them go. The mission president and
his wife become your parents here in the mission. We watched them give
their departing testimony this last Tuesday along with many of the
friends I have on the mission. At the end of next transfer all of my
previous companions besides Elder Stout will have left the mission.
I'm starting to feel really old!!!!! I don't like it!!!!!

Besides that we had a very successful week! This week I think is the
first time we were able to achieve the standards of excellence two
times in a row! Our goal is to achieve them for the rest of our
missions. Which will be much easier for Elder Jimenez because he only
has 7 week left.

Okay so here's what happened this week. We've been meeting with Jorge
regularly and his mom half as regularly. Jorge has many friends
preparing to serve a mission for the church and one of these friends
are leaving on the 6th of July and Jorge was scheduled to be baptized
on the 9th. So during one of the lessons this friend is nearly crying
because he won't be able to be there for Jorge's baptism. I look at
Jorge and say "hey how about you just get baptized on the 5th?" So he
is now on date for the 5th!!!!! His mom has been making amazing
progress as well. During one of the lessons this week we hinted to her
"hey you know Jorge is getting baptized on the 5th. Wouldn't it be
cool if you both got baptized on the same day?!" She said "yeah that
would be pretty cool" and we left her to think about it. We're trying
to not be too pushy with her because she's dropped missionaries in the
past for being too pushy. But she did think about it. In fact she
thought about it all week long.

This last Sunday we had stake conference and we had 3 investigators at
church! This was a day of miracles. Maria and Jorge were sitting next
to Elder Jimenez and I was sitting next to a new investigator named
Mario. I actually had met him that very day. A member friend had
brought him and introduced me to him and so I sat next to him. The
conference was in English but we had translation. The only problem was
that the person translating was too far away from us so it wasting
working. Mario told me that he couldn't understand anything so I
started translating for him from English to Spanish. THAT WAS
HARD!!!!! Especially because the guy giving the talk at the time was
from my Ward and he was speaking in English, his second language and he
had a crazy accent! Right after the talk was over they had moved the
translator closer to us so it was working and I didn't have to
translate anymore. It was an amazing meeting! What added to the
amazingness more was that President and Sister Chambers decided to
come and participate. Right after the meeting I was teaching this man
about the Book of Mormon and giving him his own copy and the entire
time I'm doing this President Chambers was standing behind me watching
me the entire time! President Chambers is the most intimidating man I
know and it was very unnerving to have him watch me like that. Right
when I gave this man a Book of Mormon, President Chambers comes up and
introduces himself to Mario in perfect Spanish!!!! I was thinking
"what the heck did he understand me the entire time!?!?" I had no idea
he spoke Spanish until then. Right after that the friend of Mario said
that they had to go and they left. Right after they left, Elder Lyons
came up to me and said "hey was that Mario leaving?"
Me: "yeah why?"
Him: "please tell me you invited him to be baptized."
Me: "no why!?"
Him: "I was talking to Hermano Silva (the member friend) and he told
me that Mario asked him if he could be baptized today."
Me: "WHAT!%#€%#"
I had my hand on the door ready to run Mario down and invite him to be
baptized but Elder Lyons stopped me "CALM DOWN Elder Austin! Don't run
him down you'll make him nervous!"

So that was an opportunity wasted but don't worry I repented. Later
that day I received Mario's phone number from Hermano Silva and called
him. It was literally the strangest phone call I have ever made. Never
under any other circumstances would I have ever said what I did. This
is what I said. "Hi is this Mario?"
"Sí"
"Hey this is Elder Austin, I sat next to you in the meeting."
"Brother Austin!!! Yes yes yes I remember you!"
"Yeah so I just talked to Hermano Silva and he told me that you want
to be baptized. Is that true?"
He said "claro que si" which I guess the most correct translation into
English would be "heck yeah!"
I did a kind of a chuckle of unbelief. "Do you want to meet every
single day so you can get baptized this Saturday!?"
"Yes please teach me I want be baptized!!!!!"
"Yes sir I can do that! We'll meet tomorrow at 7:00."
"Thank you thank you so much!"

And that was how I put Mario on date. Literally the most unique way
I've ever put anyone on date. He was a miracle!

Now about Maria. She was sitting next to Elder Jimenez during the
meeting and she started crying during the second talk. Right then
Elder Jimenez received the prompting to teach her in a separate room
right after the conference. He did so and invited her boldly to be
baptized. I wasn't there but from what he told me it was the most
spiritual experience on his mission. He extended the date for the 5th
of July which is the same day that Jorge has. She said yes!!!!! In the
prayer she actually talked about how thankful she was for the
missionaries and that she had already decided to be baptized a couple
days ago. It was a miracle that she accepted. She's turned down plenty
of missionaries in the past but now she's ready!!!! I am so excited to
see her be baptized!!!!!!!

And now just one last miracle. we had already planned to teach Jorge
again that very night and Maria wanted to join him. So we had our
plans and we were ready. We went to the door and knocked and Jorge's
dad answered. I can't remember if I already mentioned this but the
first time I met Jorge's dad was about 4 weeks ago when he opened the
door and said "Catholic and not interested!" But this time he said
"Elders thank you for coming. Please come in." I was dumbstruck!!!!!!
I didn't think it was the same man! We went in and the whole family
was present. Maria, Jorge Jr., Jorge senior, and their other son
Gerardo. Right when we all sat down we heard a knock at the door.
Maria opened it and an army of 5 walked in. They were all Jorge's
friends ready to teach him the truth!!!!! But I don't think they
expected at all for the whole family to be there. So we had 11 people
all in one room and we taught this family the restoration of the
Gospel of Jesus Christ. Jorge and Maria both gave testimony to the
father and the other son. They didn't accept a date but they are new
investigators and the going to read and pray as a family. We are
planning a temple square trip in which we are planning to put the
father and the other son on date at the same time.

Well that's pretty much everything that happened this week. I hope
everyone had a great week!

June 20, 2016

Hey so this week was one of the best weeks I've had in a long time!

We met a 19 year old guy named Jorge and his mom María. Jorge has a
ton of friends in the church and even some serving a mission so he was
pretty interested when we met him. His mom told us that she was going
to be straight forward with us. "I am Catholic and I'm not even
thinking in changing anything! I am only here to support my son." Well
she challenged us and we were more than happy to take it. That day we
taught them both the restoration with a solid returned missionary
named Jenny. We focused mostly on María and helping her feel
comfortable taking the next step which was to read the Book of Mormon
with Jorge and also to go to church with him. She said " Look. I
already met with missionaries 2 times and they didn't convert me then
and you won't convert me now."
Us- "did you ever attend church during those two times?"
Her- "no."
Us- "when the missionaries brought us a baptism date did you ever accept it?"
Her- "no."
Us- "well that's why you weren't converted! We promise you that you
need to exercise your faith and go to church in order to feel the
spirit of the lord testify to you that you have to be baptized!"
Her- "I know but I just get so scared of stuff like that! The last
time the missionaries invited me to be baptized I just couldn't! The
same with church!"
Us-"well this time you don't have to go alone. We will sit with you
the entire time and your son will be there to help you as well."
Jorge-"yeah mom you should come!"

That's when she agreed to go! We finished teaching the lesson and
picked them both up as new investigators. Well the next day we
received a text from Jenny telling us that we should come over because
they were having a huge soccer game and Jorge was invited. So we went
and we were dressed in white shirt and tie but no importa, we played.
It was only for like 30 minutes but it gave us more time to talk to
Jorge and also to meet some of his best friends who both already
received their mission calls!!!! We told him that Jorge and him mom
was coming to church with us the next day and invited them to come
with us and they said yes! So we got their numbers and left. Elder
Jimenez went to a meeting and I stayed in the area working with a
member. We went to visit a potential investigator but he wasn't home.
We then went to visit a member family and we taught the the
restoration and shared conversion experiences. After listening I
realized that they would be perfect for María. So we talked about her
a little and I committed them to sit by her during church.

Well Sunday came and they both showed up at church! Jorge had his best
friends sitting by them and María was talking to the family. Later
that night we taught Jorge and with 3 of his best friends and taught
him about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. During the lesson we asked how
his mom like church. She loved it and wouldn't stop talking about how
the family who sat next to her were so nice! She wants to come back
next week. We were really happy to hear about that. Later in the
lesson his friends all had the opportunity to tell Jorge that they
want him to be baptized. After this I extended the baptism invitation.
He is on date for the 9th of July. We are very excited for him.

Also we were able to find a ton of investigators and achieve the
standards of excellence! Elder Jimenez has a goal to baptized every
single week after the 2nd. I just want to baptized all the families
that we're teaching. We'll see how everything goes. We're teaching
Jorge this Tuesday and again Thursday with his mom. We also have
another investigator on date for the 2nd named Juan. I don't know much
about him because only my companion taught him but he was at church
and it sounds like that he is ready. His son is a member and I really
want his son to have the opportunity to baptize his dad.

Well that's all that I can say. I just ran out of time. Have a great week!

Well for the past 3 weeks I've been sick!

Don't know what happened but I've been having this crazy headache
which only gets worse when I exercise. So I haven't exercised for 3
weeks and it felt terrible!!!!! Usually when I don't exercise its just
because I'm lazy but I've never not exercised for health reasons. Well
I went to see a doctor and they did a bunch of scans and right after I
got a priesthood blessing. Well the doctor called 2 days later and
said that they couldn't find anything at all! Also right after the
blessing I felt completely fine! No more headaches. I'm now back to
working out and I still feel fine which is great! Priesthood power is
real!!!!

Well this week Elder Jimenez and I have been working like crazy!!!!!!!
We've been working on a new way to do street contacts and door
approaches that was introduced to us by a meeting the mission
depart, net and some of the apostles had. So we've been doing it. It's
a 4 minutes restoration lesson with every single person we talk to.
We're promised that we WILL have more convert baptisms out of this. I
believe it will happen. Hasn't het but we are doing the 4 minute
restoration with every person we talk too and we do see a difference.
One guy actually accepted baptism but doesn't live in our area but
that's okay. For sure a convert baptism for the mission though!

Well I haven't really talked about what I've been studying on the
mission but I think that it would be good to share. So during my 10
months on the mission so far I have been trying everything I can to
improve who I am. And so I've gone into a deep study on the attributes
of Christ. First faith, then diligence, then virtue and each one has
led me to something else. My study of virtue has lead me to the most
interesting topic I have ever studied. Humility and the Enabling
Power. Pretty much the Enabling Power is a special blessing we can
receive by humbling ourselves. It comes from the Grace of God. It has
the power to change any weakness into a strength, permanently. It
doesn't matter whether that weakness is something small like not being
able to get out of bed on time in the morning or something serious
such as problems with the Word of Wisdom. The Enabling Power is
available for everyone and will change you permanently. Right now I'm
trying to figure out just what I have to do to have this change so
that is what I'll be studying for some time. It's very good and if
anyone wants Tim learn more be sure to check out any talk on grace.
One that is really good that I like a lot is a talk entitled "Be
Strong in the Lord."

Anyways this week we're going to focus on using this new restoration
method to find some new investigators because our teaching pool is
very small at the moment. We're hoping to have at least 3 new solid
investigators on date by the end of this week.

I hope everyone is doing well. Have a great week!
